With Grange, begin at the vintage rather than the reputation. Penfolds describes the wine as an expression of multi-vineyard, multi-district blending (Penfolds’ Grange 2020 notes). That gives you a specific question: what went into the release you're considering?
This guide helps prepare a sourcing request. It isn't a valuation, a stock list or evidence of a Penfolds allocation. The decision still needs your taste, budget and the details of the actual bottles.
Read the technical note for that year
The Grange 2020 notes name McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Clare Valley as sourcing regions (Penfolds’ Grange 2020 notes). Record those details for 2020 rather than treating them as a description of every Grange vintage.
For another year, obtain that release's technical sheet and note the regions, blend details where given and producer guidance. Leave unavailable fields blank. A recognisable label doesn't make vintage-specific research unnecessary.
Choose vintages around a purpose
A birth-year request has a different constraint from a tasting across several seasons. Decide whether the date itself matters, whether you want to compare development or whether you're adding more of a wine you already enjoy.
Then list preferred years and acceptable alternatives. Our vintage guide helps separate regional impressions, release notes and bottle history. “A great year” still needs an explanation of whose assessment you're using and what it covers.
Ask about the particular older bottle
Request actual-bottle photographs, the available ownership and storage account, and a clear condition description. Wine Ark's framework distinguishes history from observations such as fill level, label and closure (Wine Ark’s provenance framework).
For several bottles, ask whether the history is shared or assembled from different sources. State whether original packaging is required. Don't assume the best-documented bottle represents every other one in the offer.
Use the drinking window as guidance
Penfolds' 2020 notes give a drinking window extending to 2055 (Penfolds’ Grange 2020 notes). That's attributed guidance for the release, not our assurance about every bottle or a deadline you need to obey.
Record the reference with your purchase and storage notes. If you own several bottles, set review points around your preferences rather than only a distant final date. The point of a collection is to use it, not just to keep postponing it.
Write a Grange request with clear limits
Give the vintage or range, format, quantity, budget and deadline. Specify packaging and documentation requirements, then say whether a partial quantity would work. Keep cosmetic presentation separate from questions about the wine's history.
Aaron and the team can explore the request through our sourcing network. Availability, condition information, full costs and terms need confirming before you approve anything. No winery access, future resale or financial return is promised.
Decide how much of a sequence you need
A focused tasting can begin with a few named years. A broader collection may allow you to wait for suitable bottles. List what you already own and distinguish those intended for the tasting from those you'd rather retain.
Our tasting guide explains why comparing Grange vintages differs from comparing several Penfolds labels from one year. Both can be interesting, but the brief should say which question you want to explore.
Read the offer before judging the price
- Identity: correct year, format and count.
- Images: the actual bottle, not just a product photograph.
- History: documents, seller statements and gaps kept distinct.
- Packaging: exactly what is included.
- Terms: charges, delivery and the process for a discrepancy.
A sourcing conversation isn't an authentication certificate. If you need an independent assessment, raise that before agreeing the transaction.
